MUSEUMSDORF VOLKSDORF

The Volksdorf museum village – Hamburg’s only museum village – is located right next to the Hotel du Nord. Regarded as the nucleus of the former Walddorf, excavations show traces of a settlement up to the Neolithic period. Five of the seven half-timbered houses offer guided tours. Their inventory gives us an impression of the peasant life on the Storman Geest more than a hundred years ago. The oldest building on the site is the “Spiekerhus” from 1624.

The grounds are also home to endangered species of livestock found on farms in the 19th century, such as sheep, pigs, goats and free-range chickens as well as Schleswig Coldblood horses, which were often used for agricultural work and carriage rides. The “De Spieker” Museum Association also shows agriculture from a bygone era, without the use of modern technology.

One of the houses is also set up as a farmhouse with stables corresponding to those usually only seen in picture books. The living museum brings old traditions and crafts to life at numerous events throughout the year. Participation is actively encouraged and is a particularly fun highlight for families with children.

Opening times – grounds:

Tuesday to sunday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., free admission during event-free periods

Guided tours of the buildings:

April to October: Friday to sunday 03:00 p.m.,
November to March: Sunday 03:00 p.m.
